Fishing

The Walcha district hosts some of the best fishing waters in Australia for a variety of fish. The cool, clear running waters of the high country provide a perfect environment for trout to breed and thrive, enticing anglers from all parts of Australia and overseas to try their luck.

The Walcha Trout Club ensures there is always oncoming stock of fish by carrying out an annual river stocking program of both Rainbow and Brown Trout.  A brochure on fishing information and locations around Walcha is available from the Walcha Visitor Information Centre or can be downloaded HERE.  For more information E: tourism@walcha.nsw.gov.au or P: 02 6774 2460

Wild Eastern Bass fishing in the warmer waters of the gorge country has become very popular, with low range 4WD access to the Apsley River, via the “Riverside Trail”, about an hour east of Walcha. A permit is required to enter Riverside which is part of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and World Heritage Listed Macleay Gorges Wilderness area.

You can obtain a Day Entry or Camping Permit for Riverside online HERE or by phoning 1300 072 757.
NPWS Walcha office is open Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm, phone: 02 6777 4700.
